Barbershop harmony originated in the United States in the early years of the 20th century. Maybe the men started it, singing in barber shops (yes, really) but the women soon got in on the act and now, worldwide, many thousands of women experience the joy of singing with others.
True barbershop harmony is produced by four unaccompanied voices. The lead singer sings the melody; the tenor harmonises above, the bass below and the baritone weaves around the lead filing out the chords. We sing popular songs with understandable lyrics and easily singable melodies. At its best barbershop harmony exhibits a fullness or expansion of sound, precise intonation, a high degree of vocal skill and a high level of unity and consistency within the ensemble. We add visual presentation to enhance the performance so that the message of the song is heartfelt and believable.
