What is Barbershop


Barbershop style is music with understandable lyrics and easily singable melodies, embellished by the arranger to provide appropriate support of the song's theme and to close the song effectively, it exhibits a fullness or expansion of sound, precise intonation, a high degree of vocal skill and a high level of unity and consistency within the ensemble.

Barbershop harmony singing is four part unaccompanied singing, the lead singing the tune for the most part while the harmonies are carried by the bass in the lower range, the tenor nearly always above and the baritone weaving round the lead giving added embellishment (clever people! or polyfillers!!)

For the technically minded, the harmony is written to include some major-minor sevenths, known as Barbershop sevenths, and excluding sixth, ninth and major and minor seconds; giving the style its broad
