LABBS was born out of a meeting of six ladies' clubs which had formed partly as a result of the men's association, the British Association of Barbershop singers (BABS). The women whose men had taken this hobby to their hearts and formed an association, were just as excited by the sound of four part harmony and had been regular attendees at the men's convention.

LABBS each year holds a competition for the Choruses across the UK. This consists of PRELIMS, a preliminary competition held in April usually in Birmingham, and CONVENTION which is the final for choruses who qualify with a minimum mark of 600 at Prelims, held in October.

LABBS arrange training workshops and offer the services of Barbershop experts who visit individual clubs.

For the past few years the Music and Judging Committee have organised a Harmony College weekend where ALL aspects of singing have been covered as well as such things as costume, administration of the club, quartetting, putting on a show and much more. It is a time for members from all over the country to get together and sing as well as learn. Other seminars are held regularly, such as a Music Directors' day and PRO seminars
